Has your friend recently had a baby? Do you have a new Mama in your life that you want to support well?
Having your first baby is life altering to say the least. Everything changes. Your world transforms in the best way, and you are never the same. Having a baby is one of the most beautiful, touching, and surreal experiences you can have, AND it can also at times be really difficult.
We Moms know this.
And so when there’s a new mom in our lives, we long to offer them the support we may have received ourselves.
We want to care for the new mamas around us. We want to help them, give them gifts, and let them know they’re not alone.
But this is easier said than done. We want to support them. We don’t want to make things more difficult. We want to be helpful and not overbearing, sensitive and not overstepping their boundaries. We want to give gifts that are actually going to mean something.
So today, I want to share with you some practical ideas for how you can support a new mamas. I will also offer 9 New Mom Gift Ideas that might be helpful.
So let’s begin.

How to Support a New Mom`
1. Bring them food.
The best thing people brought us when we had our babies was FOOD. As a new mom, cooking is one of the last things you feel like you have time for, and so when people bring you food, it really is a blessing.
The meals don’t have to be fancy. New moms appreciate anything!
2. Keep your visit brief.
Unless invited to do otherwise, keep your visit brief. Don’t stay too long. New moms are tired, busy, and not feeling their best. If they ask you to stay, that’s great. But if not, keep your visit quick.
3. Rejoice with them.
Romans 12:15a says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice.” New moms are rejoicing. A little one has been born! So be glad with them. Congratulate them. Celebrate!
4. Listen.
Let the new mom share anything she wants to with you. Be a listening ear. James 1:19 says, “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” This is what we are called to…not just with new moms but always.
5. Pray for them.
Prayer is powerful, because God is all-powerful. Pray for the new mom. She is weary, overwhelmed, and has great, new responsibilities. You can pray WITH her or after you go. Pray for God’s peace, wisdom, and protection over this new little family. Lift them up to Jesus.
6. Encourage her.
New moms might question if they’re doing things right. They so desperately want to care for their babies well, and yet the learning curve is steep. Tell the new mama that she is a good mom or something else encouraging. This will build her up and encourage her.

New Mom Gift Ideas
1. Meals
As aforementioned, meals are the number #1 gift idea. Bring it warm, and new moms can either eat it that day or put it in the freezer for later. Ask ahead if there are any allergies or food preferences, and make sure to put in a disposable container. No need to give new moms another job of returning a dish.
2. Snacks
Second to meals, bring them snacks. This could be granola bars, muffins, hummus, or protein balls. Anything that can be eaten with one hand, has some protein, and is delicious!
3. Pampering gifts
New moms might not feel pulled together or pretty. They might have sleepy eyes and spit up on their shirt, so why not pamper them a little? Give them something with which they can feel beautiful and refreshed. Perhaps gift them some natural, sweet-smelling soap, a lovely lotion, a pretty robe, moisturizing face cream, or a reinvigorating face wash. Give them something easy that makes them feel pretty and revived.
4. Cute baby clothes
This is the fun one, and new moms DO appreciate these. It is so fun to dress your baby in cute, fresh pieces, so go ahead and buy some that adorable outfit you’ve been eyeing.
5. Devotional or Verse Cards
Give the new mama some REAL encouragement by giving her the Word. Get some pretty paper, and write out some Bible verses for her to meditate on. If you know of a good devotional, that would also be encouraging. In the wee hours of the morning or as she sleepily begins her day, the new mama can set her mind on truth and fix her eyes on Jesus.
6. Fancy coffee
Before you come over, ask the new mom what kind of coffee she enjoys. Then, hit up Starbucks on the way. The new mom will appreciate some energy, and she will feel really spoiled too.
7. Something you found helpful as a new mom.
Think of what you found helpful as a new mom. Maybe you loved your baby carrier. Perhaps you had a favorite swaddle. You may have LIVED in a pair of slippers. Think of something specific you enjoyed, and buy a new one for your friend. She may not love it as much as you, but she MIGHT. And she will appreciate the gesture.
8. Diapers
What mom doesn’t appreciate free diapers? Pampers can be expensive, so this is a really practical gift.
9. Ask them what they need.
Ask the new mama how you can help. If she is comfortable enough to tell you what she needs, listen, and then seek to help.

It is a gift to be able to support other new moms. Let’s be encouragers, lifting each other up to Jesus, and giving real, practical support in this beautiful, busy season of life.
