How To Enjoy The Home You Have

Do you struggle to enjoy your home? Do you wish you had a bigger living room, a kitchen island, a walk-in closet, or maybe a whole new house?

Is it hard to be content?

I’m all for home remodels and buying real estate, but sometimes those things just aren’t feasible. Sometimes we can’t afford fresh tile or a different sofa, let alone a new house.

So what do we do?

How do we start to like the home we have? Where can we find contentment? In what ways CAN we start taking pride in our space?

I want to offer you 16 ways you can start nurturing thankfulness for and liking your home.

So let’s dive in.

16 Ways To Enjoy Your Home

1. Declutter

Get rid of what’s in the way. Remove items from your home that you don’t want or need. It will make your space feel lighter, cleaner, and more peaceful.

2. Clean your space.

Like decluttering, cleaning your home makes you love it more. It not only makes it look fresh and beautiful, but it also gives you a sense of pride in it. When you invest time and energy into something, you usually feel better about it and more attached to it. This is definitely true in your home.

3. Decorate slowly.

Resist the urge to buy all new decorations at the department store in one fell swoop. If your home needs some new adornment, choose to progress slowly. Don’t rush for the sake of getting it done. Be patient. Buy one picture frame. Cut one sprig of pine and put it in a jar. When you do this, your house will over time look more collected and thoughtfully decorated.

4. Show hospitality.

Invite others in. For some reason, when we share our home with others, not apologizing for it but using it for good, we will love it more. Our home will work for us and do what it was made for. We will see it through others’ eyes, and trust me, most people won’t notice the imperfections. They will just be glad to connect.

5. Talk kindly about your home.

Our words can shape how we and others feel about something. When we talk down and complain about our home, we will start to feel more discontent. But when we express gratitude, we will start to feel more thankful.

6. Pray for contentment.

Pray for contentment. God can help you grow in this.

Philippians 4:12-13 says, “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

We can be content in every circumstance through Jesus. He is the One who enables us to be okay when things aren’t perfect. We can be at peace no matter the circumstance, because God is living in us and is our Helper.

7. Explore your neighborhood.

Get outside. Get to know the surrounding neighborhood, whether you live in a city lot, small town, or acreage. Find beautiful things to enjoy. They’re there if you’re looking.

8. Add plants.

Plants add beauty to a home. They are a neutral, so they go with any decor style and color. They fill up your space in the best way. Real or artificial, add some plants.

9. Make functional items beautiful.

Myquillyn Smith says that if you see it, it’s decor. So make your everyday items beautiful.1 The scrub brush by the sink, the soap dispenser in the bathroom, and the lamp by your bed can all serve a purpose AND be lovely to look at.

10. Don’t compare.

There’s no point comparing what you have to someone else. Their home is theirs. Your home is yours. And there is beauty to be found in both.

11. Make memories in your home.

The more memories you make in your space, the more it will feel like home. Your house won’t be just a house. It will be a soft place to land. It will tell a story.

12. Paint something.

Paint is powerful. If your walls are looking drab or your bedside table doesn’t match, consider what a coat of fresh paint would do!

13. Get as much natural light as possible.

Light is lovely. It makes any room more beautiful. Remove furniture or unwanted drapes, and let in the sunshine!

14. Employ lamps.

Soft light will instantly make your room more cozy and inviting. Especially in these winter months, use lamps.

15. Find creative storage solutions.

If you lack storage space in your home and have already decluttered what you can, find creative storage options that are also beautiful. Think woven baskets, an antique dresser, or a bench with storage underneath.

16. Appreciate your blessings.

Notice the wonderful gifts around you – your cozy bed, a pot of coffee, your kids playing happily, or the smell of fresh bread baking in your oven. Take in the sunrise. Stop to watch the stream flowing by. Smile at your clean kitchen for which you labored. Thank God for something.

James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
