As homemakers, we spend most of our time in the kitchen. From cooking meals to retrieving snacks to washing dishes to unloading groceries, we are so often in this space.

We work hard in our kitchens.

And yet.

I believe they can also be a haven.

They can be inspiring to us.

I enjoy my kitchen. It is beautiful to me and a lovely place to be.

It’s not grand. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles.

It doesn’t have granite countertops, a walk-in pantry, or an island.

And yet I really like it. It’s beautiful to me.

And yours can be too…with some lovely simplicity.

Today I want to share with you 12 Tips For a Simple and Beautiful Kitchen.

12 Tips For a Simple and Beautiful Kitchen

1. Quiet your counters.

This might be one of the most effective things you can do to simplify your kitchen.

Remove almost everything from your counters. Keep only what’s beautiful and what serves a purpose. Store everything else away.

2. Keep the front of your fridge bare.

While it’s lovely to have pictures of friends and family, remember that you don’t have to display them on your fridge if you don’t want to. Just because you’ve always done something doesn’t mean you have to continue to do so. It doesn’t mean you don’t value those people and relationships. It just means you want a quieter space. And that’s okay.

3. Let the light in.

What’s more beautiful than sunlight? So, as much as you’re able, let the light in.

While you may not be able to get a bigger window or another window, you CAN take down your curtains or pull up the blinds. You can wash the fingerprints and open some doors.

Sunlight truly makes a room more lovely.

4. Only keep what you ACTUALLY use.

Go through your cupboards and drawers and critically assess what you really use and what you don’t. Declutter the things that you don’t regularly make us of. This will free up space and make your kitchen feel more curated and simplified. You will be better able to find what you need and put things away, and your space will feel like it can breathe (so to speak).

5. Opt for simple and versatile kitchen tools.

Let’s face it. There is a kitchen gadget for almost everything. But the truth is you don’t NEED a gadget for everything.

Basic tools like knives, spoons, a whisk, a spatula, etc. can do SO much, and we don’t need all the bells and whistles. While I do love a few gadgets, the more automated and complicated items we acquire, the more maintenance and storage we have to manage.

Contrary to popular opinion, having fewer, simpler items makes your life so much more pleasant.

6. Store everyday items where you use them.

House your everyday kitchen essentials where you need them. This might mean keeping your knives close to your cutting boards, your mugs right by your coffee maker, or your dish soap under your sink.

7. Display plants and flowers.

Real or artificial plants add a lot to a space. Whether it’s a cute little succulent, some fresh-cut flowers or a big, leafy fern, plants make a space feel alive and fresh.

8. Take weekly inventory of your food.

Take a look at what you have in your freezer, fridge, and pantry. Notice what you’d like to use up that week. This will help limit food waste and preserve space.

9. Meal plan.

After taking inventory, make a plan of meals for that week. This will help you buy purposefully and not clutter up your space with unneeded food items.

10. Appreciate what your space DOES have.

Remember what your space has to offer. Is it a wonderful view? A cute coffee corner? An island with bar stools? A farmhouse sink? Pretty hardware?

You probably don’t have everything. But you very likely have something you like.

Let’s be for thankful for what we do have!

11. Keep it tidy.

A clean kitchen is SO much more enjoyable to be in. This doesn’t mean perfection. Messes still happen, but we can also develop tidy habits to steward our kitchens well.

12. Repeat Meals

You don’t have to make new meals every week. You can repeat favorites. You can keep things simple. This will cut out so much stress and overwhelm in your kitchen.

Having a simple, beautiful kitchen isn’t rocket science, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. It can be in those tiny decisions, creative pursuits, and mindset shifts that we find we actually really enjoy our kitchens. It is truly a gift to get to steward such a space and use it to care for our families.

FAQ About Simple, Beautiful Kitchens:

1. What are some of your favorite kitchen organizational tools?

I don’t use a lot. I primarily store things as they are in cupboards and drawers, but there are a few things I enjoy.

I love my wooden drawer organizers. Here is something similar.

2. Why is it important to have a beautiful, simple kitchen?

There’s nothing saying you need a beautiful, simple kitchen. However, I think it’s a wonderful way to steward our homes and serve our families. It’s enjoyable being in a lovely space, and God made us to enjoy His good gifts (1 Tim. 6:17). It’s fun to create beauty, and we can reflect our Creator (Gen. 1) by making beautiful things too.
