Springtime Sourdough: 5 Recipe Ideas

Who doesn’t love bread?

It is a staple in most kitchens. It is incredibly versatile, delightfully satiating, and wholesomely filling. Bread is wonderful.

Sourdough, however, takes bread to a whole new level. Easily digestible and full of good bacteria, sourdough is kinder on our stomachs and good for our gut health. It is nourishing and delicious.

Last February, I tried my hand at it for the first time. I asked a relative for some of her starter. I watched videos to learn what I could, and then, with some trepidation, I mixed up my ingredients.

There have been successful loaves made, and there have been what you might call “flops.” But I am here, over a year later, still making it regularly.

If you haven’t made sourdough but want to, here’s my encouragement. Go for it! It’s not as hard or as time-consuming as you might think.

Sourdough is actually a great hobby for moms, and contrary to popular belief, it’s not hard or complicated.

A lot of what I’ve learned about sourdough have come from Lisa bass from Farmhouse on Boone.1 Here is her YouTube channel link as well.2

Now let’s dive in.

Why stay-at-home moms may enjoy baking sourdough.

1. It’s delicious.

It goes without saying, but sourdough is delicious. It offers something more than just regular white bread. And, fresh sourdough is next level. The taste of homemade bread truly can’t be replicated.

2. It’s forgiving.

Sourdough is forgiving. It can withstand a lot more than one might think. Trust me I’ve made some mistakes along the way.

Sourdough is more of an art form than a math equation, and it’s a gentle, kind art that produces lovely results 95% of the time. Yes, baking sourdough is not nearly as picky or problematic as many expect.

3. It fits seamlessly into a mom’s day.

Baking sourdough can fit seamlessly into a stay-at-home mom’s life. The majority of her life revolves around home – going from task to task, slow productivity and a hundred moments of connection – she can easily work on sourdough when she has a few minutes here and there.

Sourdough isn’t tied to the clock. It’s not in a hurry, and so a mom can get to it when she can and fit it in where she wants.

4. It’s versatile.

Sourdough goes with anything and can take a thousand possible forms. It can be a sandwich bread, a breakfast toast, the crust of a pizza, or a waffle.

Because it’s so adaptible, the benefit of learning it is exponential.

5. It slows you down.

Sourdough is slow, and so it encourages moms to be too. While certain steps can be hurried, it’s a process that takes time, patience, and thoughtfulness. It invites a mama to get in there with her hands, to create something physical and not to rush to the end too quickly.

6. It’s rewarding.

In the digital age in which we live, it feels good to make something with our hands. To create beauty, to learn a skill that in the past felt intimidating, and to nourish our families well are all truly rewarding feats that stay-at-home moms can enjoy.

Baking sourdough does take effort, but the payoff is well worth it.
