Toddler Meal Ideas (that they can help make)

It is a privilege to cook for our children! And it can be really enjoyable too! It’s rewarding to watch them eat and be nourished by the food we make.

But feeding toddlers can be daunting for two reasons.

1. Toddlers can be picky eaters. They may have strong preferences about what they do or don’t like. You may feel at a loss as to what to cook for them. You want them to eat what you’re eating, but enforcing this is often challenging.

2. Moms are busy. Actually finding the time to cook can be difficult. Moms have their hands full (mentally and physically), and spending time in the kitchen can seem burdening. How do we keep our children entertained while we prepare their food? How do we cook and watch them at the same time?

If you feel burnt out about meal time, I want to give you two pieces of permission:

  1. You don’t have to serve different meals all the time. If you find a type of meal or food that works, perhaps you could stick with it for a while.
  2. Your child can sometimes play on their own. I have included some tips on how you can include them in the cooking process if you want to. But if you find that it’s easier to let them play while you do a quick prep, it’s okay. It’s better to be a mom who’s kind than a mom who teaches her toddler to cook. Make sure they’re safe, and then take some time to cook. You may be surprised at just how much fun they can create even on their own! Watch their imagination soar!

Perhaps that’s all you need to hear. Go ahead and enjoy your day. 🙂

But if you want to include your toddler in food prep and if you need some fresh meal ideas, keep reading!

Here is a list of 8 Toddler Meal Ideas. These could be complete meals or just snacks.

Don’t worry if your toddler doesn’t enjoy all of these meals. They may not!

But maybe they’ll enjoy one! And perhaps that’s all the inspiration you need.

So here we go!

1. Scrambled Eggs and Toast

Scrambled eggs are protein-rich and quick to prepare. Grease your pan with coconut oil or rich butter, and season your eggs simply with salt. Serve them with or on a slice of toast for a satisfying and filling repast.

How Your Toddler Can Help: If your child is careful around the stove, allow them to stand on a stool or chair and stir the scrambled eggs. If you are uncomfortable with this option, welcome them to administer the toaster or shake some salt onto their eggs.

2. Soup and Sandwiches

A soup and sandwich is a cozy winter lunch, and there are countless varieties to choose from! Soups like chicken noodle, tomato, carrot ginger or minestrone are delightful this time of year! Sandwiches like ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, BLT, and tuna are incredibly satisfying.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Again, if you trust your toddler around the stove, offer that they can stir the soup when it’s safe to do so. You might also let them build their own sandwich or slice their own cheese and bread.

3. Muffins with Cheese/Peanut Butter

Muffins may not feel like a lunch option, but when they are packed with superfoods and topped with protein-rich cheese or peanut butter, they become heartier and more satisfying.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Have your toddler stand on a chair or stool beside you. After you have measured, let them pour in the ingredients. They can then help stir and fill the muffin tins.

4. Pick-Your-Own-Adventure Charcuterie

Kids love finger food, and there are so many options out there to build a kids’ charcuterie plate. A combination of pepperoni, cheese string, cut-up veggies and fruit, crackers, chips, nuts, and dips make a great finger-food lunch! As long as they have at least one protein option, this meal can certainly fill their little bellies.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Give your child options, and let them assemble their plate. While you might give guidelines like “at least one meat or fruit/veggie,” invite them to pick the other options for themselves. They might also enjoy cutting their own fruit or veggies (think cucumber) with a butter knife.

5. Smoothies and Grilled Cheese

Smoothies are a delicious way to serve really healthy ingredients. Things like Greek yogurt, milk, seeds, nut butters, fruit, and even greens like spinach and avocado go great in smoothies! Bananas often provide a lot of sweetness, but if you’re needing a bit more, maple syrup or honey are delicious, healthy options.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a classic lunch choice, bulking up this meal for you and your toddler to enjoy! Add nutrition by swapping white bread for whole grain or sourdough, and add a little extra protein by sliding a slice of ham in with the cheese.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Invite your child to put ingredients into the blender, secure the lid and press the button. Let them grab straws or choose a favorite cup from which to drink.

6. Wraps

Wraps are a convenient vehicle to load up on hearty food. Vegetables, meat, cheese, nut butter, or egg can all be delicious ingredients in a wrap.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Get your toddler to assemble their own wrap. They may want one big wrap filled with cheese, meat, and veggies, or they may prefer small bits of wrap with one thing inside. Whichever they prefer, they will enjoy having a hand in its creation.

7. Ground Beef on Chips or Rice

Ground beef with delicious spices makes a tasty protein for your toddler. Add in some plain tortilla chips or rice, and you have a hearty, filling meal.

How Your Toddler Can Help: Let them choose if they want rice or chips and then scoop the meat onto their carb of choice.

8. Healthy Pancakes or Waffles

Pancakes and waffles can be very nutritious when they are made with quality ingredients. Throw in some oats or Greek yogurt or flax seed. Top it with maple syrup and peanut butter or some delicious blueberries!

How Your Toddler Can Help: If you are combining your ingredients in a blender, you could invite your toddler to press the button. If you are stirring, let them stir a little. Give them choices as to toppings, and create a fun family meal together.

I hope this post encourages you, Mama, and gives you some fresh inspiration. You are doing a great job.
