How to Build a Fall Capsule Wardrobe (nursing-friendly)

It’s sometimes hard to know what to wear, and as the seasons change, it can be even more difficult. Sweaters, long pants, and long sleeves are slowly making their appearance. Boots and coats will become the norm, and shorts will be packed away for another year. It can be tempting to want to hit up the stores, purchase every cute sweater we see and feel like we need a whole wardrobe makeover in order to truly embrace the season. We wonder what we should really be wearing, and sometimes it’s difficult to find just the “right” items.

A change in the physical season can bring up a lot of questions and ponderings. But a change in life season can do that also. As a young Mom with a nursing baby and a busy toddler, it can feel challenging to know what to wear. Our clothes need to serve a lot of purposes. They need to be durable, functional, and make us feel put together in this beautiful and exhausting time of life. We don’t have time to be indecisive or try on ten different outfits in the morning.

Our days are full. And our clothes need to work for us and not the other way around.

Enter the capsule wardrobe.

According to modernminimalism.com, “A capsule wardrobe is a collection of thoughtfully curated, easily interchangeable items designed to maximize the number of outfits you can create..”1

Creating a capsule wardrobe is something I’ve done almost by accident. I gravitate towards certain colors, silhouettes, and styles. Most of my clothing can be worn together, and I don’t have a lot of it. Out of necessity, most of it is also nursing-friendly and comfortable enough for running after a toddler.

If you too want to embrace this season of the year and season of life but you’re struggling to know what to wear or how to put pieces together, perhaps a capsule wardrobe is right for you too. It doesn’t mean you have to go buy dozens of new items. In fact, it may mean just the opposite. It begins by looking at what you have, removing the things you won’t or don’t wear, and perhaps picking one or two new items to purchase in the future.

If you are interested in creating a Fall Capsule Wardrobe that’s also nursing friendly to fit this season of life, here are some items you might want to include.

  1. Pant options

Depending on your preference, this could mean a pair of skinnies and a pair of wide leg jeans. Or perhaps, a pair of dark-wash and a pair of light. Maybe throw some leggings in there. While I often love the wider leg jeans, I find I need different styles to compliment different outfits. If I’m wearing runners or sandals, the wider leg jeans look great. But if I want to wear boots, I prefer my skinnies. Having a variety of styles can help in creating different looks for different occasions.

  1. Layering tops

Have a few shirts that can be layered with a sweater or jacket, perhaps 2 or 3 short-sleeve tops in a neutral or muted color. I personally love earth tones, so most of my tops fall into that palette and go fairly well with the other items in my closet.

  1.  Formal and casual shirts

Again, having options of one or two formal tops and one or two casual ones can make it so that you always have something to wear that fits the occasion.

  1. Cardigans and sweaters

These are perfect additions for when the weather gets chilly and you need something on your arms. They can also be dressed up or down depending on what you pair them with! You can throw a cardigan over a dress or don a cozy sweater with some skinny jeans.

  1. Nursing-friendly dresses

I love having dress options for church, and I have found two nursing-friendly pieces that I just love. Again, these dresses are in the earth tones, so they pair nicely with the cardigans I already own. I will link one of them here!

  1. Jackets

As the weather gets cooler, jackets are essential. Jean jackets are a great addition to a Sunday outfit and rain coats are perfect for those family walks in the evenings. They pair with any outfit and can bring a look together seamlessly.

  1. Shoes for every occasion

While you might not need snow boots yet, having some warmer footwear is certainly in order. Perhaps a pair of ankle boots and some neutral colored sneakers. Maybe a pair of sandals on those warm afternoons would come in handy. By simply having a few shoe options that can work for different situations can make it to where you’re not wondering each time what to wear. The decision is already made, and you feel put together every time.

I hope these tips got your wheels turning, and let me know in the comments what are some of your favorite Fall outfits.
